A1 & A2 Testing
A1 milk is obtained from cows of Western origin like Holstein Friesian, Jersey etc.However, it is the protein component in the milk that differentiates the two from each other in terms of quality. A1 milk has A1 type of protein (casein) and A2 milk has A2 type of protein (casein). Casein is the largest group of proteins found in milk which makes up about 80% of the total protein content. Dominant traits for favourable milk proteins, such as Kappa-Casein A2 Beta-Casein, are dramatically increasing value for breeding and human nutrition. Beta-casein is one of six milk proteins and is produced by the CSN2 gene.
GTPL offers genetic testing to identify variants within the A1 and A2 groups. Our test would enable breeders and milk producers to develop a diverse product to cater health conscious peoples.It is a difference in the protein in the milk. Currently, A2 milk is marketed as a healthier choice than regular A1 milk. Proponents assert that A2 has several health benefits and is easier for people with milk intolerance to digest. A1 milk belongs to a cross breed cows whereas A2 milk belongs to pure indigenous Indian cows.
Test Results:
Research has identified a mutation or SNP (single
nucleotidepolymorphism) in the bovine DNA sequence that distinguishes the A1
andA2 protein variants. When animals have an adenine (A) nucleotide atposition
200 of the Beta-casein gene the protein type is A1 or B, and whenthey have a
cytosine (C) nucleotide, the protein type is A2 or (rarely)A3.
The test identifies three classes of animal:
A2/A2Where the beta-casein genotype is CC the
animal will produce milk withan A2 or (rarely) A3 protein type.
A1/A1Where the genotype is AA the animal will
produce milk with anA1 or Bprotein type.
A1/A2Where the genotype is AC the animal has one
allele of each type and willproduce milk with a mixture of protein types.
